“Education is not merely the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

-W.B. Yeats

The GROWBIOINTENSIVE® technique has been demonstrated effectively in over 152 countries in virtually all soils and climates where food can be grown.

It is a powerful agricultural technique which if used properly can build soils 60x faster than in nature (source) while using:

GB+(56+of+75).jpg
  • 67-88% less water

  • 97-99% less energy

  • 50-100% less purchased fertilizer

and

  • Producing 2-6x higher yields

This approach can enable individuals to reduce the amount of land needed to produce their own food by 50-98%; leaving more land to restore to ecosystems, aquifers, wildlife habitat and endangered species.

The Victory Gardens for Peace Challenge

There will soon come a time where gardening is no longer a hobby, but once again a way of life.

Ecology Action’s Sustainability Checklist

We are eager for people to put GROW BIOINTENSIVE into practice, but we want to make certain that each farmer is aware that their garden or mini-farm is only as sustainable as the techniques used by the farmer. For this reason, we have created the following “check-list” to help you keep track of your progress away from soil-depletion and ecosystem destruction, and towards true, abundant sustainability. To be considered as a true GROW BIOINTENSIVE Sustainable Mini-Farm, the garden, mini-farm, or farm of an individual, project, program, or organization must be using a specific group of practices in a specific way. These practices are grouped in three levels of increasing involvement.

Ecology Action’s Sustainability Protocols

Sustainability Protocol

Sustainability in the GROW BIOINTENSIVE (GB) system comes from the soil. Achieving this requires maintaining closed-looping sustainability over the years, and relies on practicing, understanding and internalizing the GB procedures that make sustainability possible. This protocol is written for people who have advanced through the beginning stages of GB and are using it to create successful gardens and/or are teaching the method to other people through projects and programs. The goal is to remind practitioners of the procedures required to create and keep GB sustainable. It might be thought of as a personal teacher helping guide the practitioner.

Compost Protocol

GROW BIOINTENSIVE is a powerful method for increasing productivity and sustainable fertility, but used incorrectly, it will damage your soil. The purpose of each of Ecology Action’s three GROW BIOINTENSIVE (GB) Protocols — the Soil Protocol, the Sustainability Protocol, and this Compost Protocol is to emphasize that GB teachers’ primary goal must be to learn the GB method thoroughly, remain true to the method as taught by Ecology Action, and make sure that all eight foundational principles of the method remain undiluted in their teaching and demonstration, so that the people they teach do not “cut corners” and practice GB in an unsustainable way. This Compost Protocol is for teachers and certification candidates to use in conjunction with the Soil Protocol and the Sustainability Protocol, while practicing the GROW BIOINTENSIVE method as taught by Ecology Action and the book How to Grow More Vegetables. In this protocol, you will find new material that brings Ecology Action’s research on compost up to date and makes that information easier to put into practice.
